A visit to Museum of Goa

Imagine stepping into a world where art isn’t just about aesthetics but a vivid tapestry of history, culture, and innovation. That’s exactly what our founder, Kurul Tyagi, experienced during her recent visit to the Museum of Goa (MoG), a hidden gem nestled in the heart of this vibrant state.

Founded by the visionary Dr. Subodh Kerkar in 2015, this private contemporary art space is a celebration of Goa’s rich heritage and its people through the lens of modern art. MoG isn’t just a museum; it’s a living narrative of Goa’s history, told through the eclectic and often provocative medium of contemporary art.

"Walking through the museum, I was struck by the diversity and depth of the artworks. Each piece seemed to resonate with a story of Goa’s past, present, and future. From installations that explore the impact of colonialism to those that celebrate the everyday life of Goan people, the art at MoG is deeply reflective and thought-provoking.

One particular artwork that captured my imagination was Subodh Kerkar’s “Chillies” installation. Crafted with fiberglass, rubber tires, and cotton fabric, this installation was more than just an artistic creation. It was a tribute to the culinary revolution sparked by the arrival of chillies in Goa via Portuguese trade routes centuries ago. The vibrant red chillies, cascading from the ceiling, symbolized not just a spice but the fiery spirit of Goa’s cultural transformation." Says Kurul.

This visit wasn’t just about admiring art; it was a journey of discovery, a deep dive into the soul of a place intertwined with artistry and heritage. The Museum of Goa brilliantly bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary, creating a space where the past and present coalesce in a harmonious dance of creativity.

For anyone seeking to understand the essence of Goan culture and history through the eyes of modern art, a visit to MoG is an absolute must. It’s a place where art speaks in the language of history, inviting you to listen, learn, and be inspired.
